Why do the auctioneers speak so fast?

Why do the auctioneers speak so fast?

If you've ever been to an auction or watched auctions on TV, I'm sure you will ask yourself why did the auctioneer talk so fast?

At first I thought it was because the faster they sold an item, the more money they made;

What I found was they spoke too quickly to keep the bid lively and interesting, because people would lose interest if it was slow and boring.

They don't always speak fast, most incorrect auctioneers speak fast, they just shorten and concatenate words.

An example of this that I have found would be "You will give" = "Illyagive".

So it's the same length of time when we talk and say "will" instead of "go to", but the auctioneer will do it with all their words.

Talking like an auctioneer is not easy either, they actually spent a lot of time practicing it.
